Types of bariatric surgery include:
Gastric bypass
The gastric bypass is the “gold standard” for weight-loss surgery. During the procedure, your surgeon creates a small stomach pouch by removing the top portion of your stomach from the rest of the organ.
Your surgeon makes an incision in the first portion of your small intestine — the duodenum — and divides it in half and attaches the 1-ounce stomach pouch to the distal portion of the small intestine, bypassing the first section.
Sleeve gastrectomy
During the sleeve gastrectomy, your surgeon removes the outer portion of your stomach, creating a banana-like sleeve.
The surgery limits the amount of food you can eat and removes the portion of the stomach that releases your hunger hormones, helping to control your appetite.
Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD/DS)
The BPD/DS is a two-part procedure.
First, your surgeon creates a small stomach pouch similar to the sleeve gastrectomy. Then, your surgeon connects the stomach to the end portion of your duodenum, bypassing a major part of your small intestine.
The BPD/DS procedure limits the amount of food you can eat, reduces hunger pangs, and reduces nutrient absorption.
